An Introduction Social Media for Researchers

Get an overview of what social media is out there, how you might use it, how other researchers are already using it, and what to think about in terms of time, skills, and possible results.

About this course

Many researchers and scientists shy away from social media because of time, priories or a simple dislike of the medium. As a communication tool, social media can be useful to researchers when used, but it can also cause problems when not used! In this short introduction to social media for researchers, we’ll explore what social media is, how it can be used to support your work and what you need to be aware of even if you decide that “social” simply isn’t for you.

Want something more practical?
If you are already familiar with social media and you want to attend a practical workshop to set up your social accounts, get your first post out there, and create a plan for ongoing outreach and online communication, our “Practical Social Media for Researchers” workshop is for you. During this short seminar-style introduction to social media, we’ll cover:

  • What is social media and why should you care
  • A brief introduction to different social media tools and how they are used
  • How social media is being used at scientific and other events (case studies & best practice)
  • The good, the bad, and the ugly of social media
  • Social media and your career as a scientist
  • How much time you need to invest in different types of social media
  • Quick-start guidelines

There will be time for questions, and sharing of knowledge during the session.

Researchers and scientists interested in using social media to communicate their research, or who aren’t sure about social media, or scientists who are “anti-” social media but who attend scientific events where social media might become an issue.

This session is designed to introduce you to social media, making you aware of what’s out there, the pros and cons of using social media to share your science, and how the way in which OTHER PEOPLE use social media can make or break your research (forewarned is forearmed).
